Climate Farmers project
Climate Farmers is a project about agriculture and climate change promoting case studies of European young farmers who recognise their responsibility to play a part in the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of their farms. Twelve measures from four different countries (Ireland, Spain, The Netherlands, Sweden) have been selected as case studies and analysed in depth by 24 young farmers. They looked at the social and economic context of the measures, and considered whether the measures could be applied in other countries.
To see the examples of best practices and the case studies please go to www.climatefarmers.eu.
From theory to practice
European young farmers are always looking for ways to make food production more sustainable. Examples of good farming practices have been gathered which have been examined in terms of GHG emissions and cost-effectiveness. These practices are already being used in some European dairy and arable farms and are aimed at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.![]()
A measure is qualified as a best-practice when:
- It results in a reduction of GHG emissions
- It can be easily implemented in the farm management
- It is cost-efficient
Social responsibility and awareness
By assisting the sharing of information between young farmers, the aim of the project is to raise awareness of the fact that reducing of GHG emissions can be made possible with simple techniques. This will open the door to new ideas and help tackle the problem of climate change.
Results
The project’s results are compiled in a comprehensive booklet available in EN, FR, ES, DE, and NL entitled: ‘Climate Farmers – Good farming practices for climate change mitigation’ which is now available on the NAJK website: www.climatefarmers.eu. Should you require a hard copy of the booklet, please contact the NAJK secretariat at info(at)climatefarmers.eu to receive a hard copy free of charge.
Young farmers are also invited to fill in the Climate Farmers Questionnaire:
