Cappagh Young Farmers’ Club
Charity Event to support the local Care for Cancer organisation
Held in the spirit of the clubs' theme of the year “help and encourage others”, Cappagh Young Farmers' Club's project was to raise money for the Care for Cancer organisation. The goal was to raise as much money as possible for the local charity by selling prize draw tickets and organising a community competition and a disco.
The club is located in County Tyrone in the centre of Northern Ireland.
A day of activities
A committee of 25 members was set up to plan the project. There were three parts of the charity event:
- Knockout competition - a wide variety of wet and dry games
- BBQ & Disco at the local rugby club
- Prize draw
The Charity event was a big success, making the profit of over 1600 pounds for Care for Cancer.

Benefits
This compassionate and heartfelt project was effectively managed and brought the local community closer together. One of the key outcomes of the project was to build better community relations. The committee had to work as a team with a project that demanded good communications skills. Committee members learned a lot about running charity events and more importantly are motivated to organise future charity events for their local community.

Kells & Connor Young Farmers’ Club of County Antrim – Northern Ireland
Fundraiser for Kells & Connor senior citizens group
When times were tough in Kells & Connor, the local Young Farmers’ Club decided to make an effort and do a special local project. As funding for the local senior citizens group was withdrawn at the start of the year 2009, the Kells & Connor Young Farmers organised a community fundraiser as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.
Kells & Connor is a small rural village lacking proper public services in County Antrim in the north-east of Northern Ireland.
Wheelbarrow push
The committee of Kells & Connor Young Farmers organised a fundraising activity to support the local senior citizen's club and enable them to run their club programme, even if at a reduced level. The main activity was a wheelbarrow push of 10 miles. Members of Kells & Connor Young Farmers Club collected money from spectators and local business owners were contacted successfully for donations. The Wheelbarrow Push raised sufficient funds for the local senior citizens group to hold their annual programme as well as monthly meetings.
Benefits
The project allowed members to gain a sense of self-value and realise the value of being active citizens within their own community. The profile of the organisations was raised due to the project, and most importantly, members got to do something to improve the life quality of the community’s elders.
